Makeup on your wedding day is a big deal. It is not just about looking glam for the aisle, it is about feeling like the best version of yourself all day, through heat, hugs, and maybe a few ugly-cry moments.
In this episode of The Bridal Education Podcast, I sat down with Neek from Makeup by Neek Maree to chat about bridal beauty, skin prep, pricing, and a few hilarious behind-the-scenes stories (ever had to rip a bridesmaid out of her dress before the ceremony? Neek has).

FROM SALON KID TO BRIDAL PRO
Neek’s journey started when she was just 16, nervously doing makeup for her first maternity shoot client. Fast forward more than a decade, and she is now a trusted Central Queensland bridal makeup artist, working with brides across Rockhampton and Toowoomba.
Her style? Minimalist, soft glam, and focused on enhancing natural beauty. As she puts it: “I’m not everyone’s cup of tea. If you want full glam cut creases, I’ll happily point you in the right direction. But if you want natural, long-lasting bridal makeup that looks good in real life and in photos, I’m your girl.”
BRIDAL MAKEUP MISCONCEPTIONS
Neek says one of the biggest myths is that brides need way more makeup than they think. The truth? It depends on your style, your photographer’s editing style, and how you want to feel.
- Heavy vs natural: Decide whether you want your look to pop in photos or appear soft in person
- Makeup artists are not magicians: If you have smile lines or texture, makeup can soften but not erase it
- Breakouts are not the end of the world: Call your artist, follow their advice, and trust they have tricks to minimise it
💡 Pro tip: Neek swears by the Ronia F5 Buffing Brush, a small but powerful tool that smooths out creases and blends seamlessly. It is perfect for touch-ups on smile lines and under the eyes.
SKIN PREP: THE UNSEXY BUT CRUCIAL PART
Here is the tea: you cannot roll into your wedding morning with dry, flaky skin and expect miracles. Makeup only sits as well as the base underneath.
- Start skincare prep 6 to 12 months out if you can
- Know your skin type (hint: “I think I’m oily” is not enough, go see a pro)
- Stop using retinol at least a month before the wedding unless you want peeling
- Drink plenty of water and hydrate your lips
As Neek jokes, “Lipstick looks pretty terrible if your lips are cracked, so drink the water. And maybe put the straw down, apparently our generation’s lip lines are from iced coffee habits, not cigarettes.”
THE TRUTH ABOUT PRICING
“Makeup is a luxury service,” Neek says. And she is right. You are paying for more than a foundation application. You are paying for high-quality products, years of experience, artistry, and the hours of prep that begin long before the wedding morning.
She also keeps it real about bridal parties: the more people in the chair, the earlier the alarms (yes, even 5am starts), the higher the cost, and the more moving parts to juggle.
Her advice? If you want to save money and stress, keep your bridal party small. Or, like Neek now says she would do if she could go back, skip the bridal party altogether and just hang out with your closest friends in your PJs while getting ready.
TIMELINES, STEAMING, AND THAT ONE BRIDESMAID
Neek sends out a questionnaire before every wedding to plan the timeline backwards from the ceremony. She factors in travel, photography, and how many people need glam.
Her timeline tips:
- Start early enough, especially with big parties
- Keep everyone nearby and ready for their turn in the chair
- Do not steam dresses after makeup is applied (heat and humidity will melt your foundation faster than you can say “touch-up kit”)
And then there is the story of the bridesmaid whose zipper broke right before walking out the door. Neek had to physically rip her out of the dress. Luckily, she had spares. Lesson learned: always prepare for the unexpected.
NEEK’S BEST PIECE OF ADVICE
At the end of the day, Neek says the most important thing is to enjoy it.
“Take five minutes with your partner. Step away, breathe, have a cuddle, and remember the day is about you two. Because sometimes, that is the only time you will actually have alone together.”

FAQS ABOUT BRIDAL MAKEUP WITH NEEK MAREE
WHAT IS THE BIGGEST MISCONCEPTION ABOUT BRIDAL MAKEUP?
Neek explained that many brides think they need more makeup than they really do. It is about your personal style and how you want to feel, not piling on layers.
WHEN SHOULD I START SKIN PREP BEFORE MY WEDDING?
She recommends starting 6–12 months before, and stopping retinol at least one month before the wedding to avoid peeling.
WHY IS BRIDAL MAKEUP SO EXPENSIVE?
Because it covers high-quality products, years of experience, and the early start times needed for large bridal parties.
WHAT TIMELINE MISTAKES SHOULD BRIDES AVOID?
Neek warns not to steam dresses after makeup is applied. Heat and humidity can undo hours of work in minutes.
